Scarsdale

Town in southeastern New York State, 32 km/20 mi north of New York City; population (1990) 17,000. It is an upper-middle-class residential suburb.

The British general Sir William Howe had his headquarters in the Griffin House here in October 1776, just before the Battle of White Plains, during the American Revolution.
