Schürmann, Georg Caspar

Schürmann, Georg Caspar (c. 1672–1751)

German singer and composer. He was first engaged at the Hamburg opera (1693–97) and then at Wolfenbüttel. He entered the service of the Duke of Brunswick, who sent him to Italy for further study. Between 1702 and 1707 he was given leave to enter the service of the Duke of Meiningen, after which he remained at Wolfenbüttel until his death.

Works

operas Télémaque (after Fénelon), Heinrich der Vogler (in two parts, 1718 and 1721), Die getreue Alceste (after Euripides, 1719), Ludovicus Pius (1726), and c. 16 others; New Year cantata.
