Schally, Andrew V(ictor) (1926– )

Polish-born endocrinologist who was awarded a Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine in 1977 for the discovery of hormones produced by the hypothalamus region of the brain. A protein chemist and endocrinologist before joining Baylor University in the USA, he spent his career isolating and determining the chemical structures of hypothalamic hormones that affect the thyroid, adrenals, gonads, and somatic growth. He shared the prize with Roger Guillemin and Rosalyn Yalow.
