Scharwenka, (Ludwig) Philipp (1847–1917)

German-Polish composer and teacher. On the family's removal to Berlin he studied music at Kullak's school there, where he remained as teacher until 1881. In that year he joined his brother's newly opened Conservatory; on his brother's departure for America in 1891 he became director, together with Hugo Goldschmidt. In 1880 he married the violinist Marianne Stresow (1856–1918).

Works

two symphonies, serenade, Festival Overture, Liebesnacht, Arcadian Suite, symphonic poems Frühlingswogen and Traum und Wirklichkeit; violin concerto (1895); Herbstfeier and Sakuntala (after Kalidasa) for solo voices, chorus, and orchestra; piano trio in C♯ minor; three concert pieces for violin and piano, violin and cello studies; Album polonais, three sonatas and many other works for piano.
