Schat, Peter (1935– )

Dutch composer. He became well known as an experimental composer, although he later came under the influence of minimalism.

He studied in Utrecht and The Hague, and then with Mátyás Seiber and Pierre Boulez.

Works

Orchestral

Mosaics for orchestra; Cryptogamen for baritone and orchestra; Signalement for six percussion instruments and three double basses; Improvisations and Symphonies for wind quintet.

Opera and stage music

Labyrinth for ‘musical theatre’ with ‘happenings’ (produced Amsterdam, 1966); circus opera Houdini (1976); opera Symposium (on the life of Tchaikovsky, 1994).
