Schech, Marianne (1914–1999)

German soprano. She made her debut at Coblenz in 1937, as Marta in d'Albert's Tiefland/The Lowland. She sang widely in Germany, and was a member of the Bavarian State Opera (1945–70), notably appearing as Pamina (Mozart Die Zauberflöte/The Magic Flute), Chrysothemis (Strauss, Elektra), the Marschallin (Strauss, Der Rosenkavalier/The Rose Cavalier), and Sieglinde (Wagner, Die Walküre/The Valkyrie) . In 1956 she made her debuts at the Metropolitan New York Metropolitan Opera House, and the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, as Venus in Wagner's Tannhäuser. In 1959 she appeared at San Francisco in 1959, as the Dyer's Wife in the first US performance of Strauss's Die Frau ohne Schatten/The Woman without a Shadow. She recorded Wagner's Senta (Der fliegende Holländer/The Flying Dutchman) and Venus, under Franz Konwitschny.
