Schechter, Solomon (c. 1847–1915)

Romanian Hebraic scholar and educator. While a lecturer at Cambridge University, Schechter gained wide notice for identifying a Hebrew fragment as a lost portion of biblical Apocrypha. He subsequently located some 50,000 old Hebrew and Arabic manuscripts. In 1901 he moved to New York, and became the major Jewish scholar in the USA.
