Schechter v. US

    0.06 sec.

Schechter v. US

US Supreme Court decision of 1935 dealing with the constitutionality of New Deal legislation over labor standards and trade practices.

Found guilty under the National Industrial Recovery Act 1933 of violating minimum-wage and maximum-hours regulations, Schechter, a New York poultry dealer, appealed his case to the US Supreme Court. He argued that since he was a local dealer operating an exclusively intrastate trade, the case was outside federal jurisdiction. The Court found that Schechter's trade had no direct effect on interstate commerce and was therefore not subject to Congressional regulation. This was a serious blow to New Deal recovery policies.
