Schelomo

Hebrew rhapsody for cello and orchestra by the Swiss-born US composer Ernest Bloch, based on the Book of Ecclesiastes. It was composed in 1916 and first performed in New York on 3 May 1917.

It has a wider currency than its companion pieces, although Ernst Bloch's Schelomo - a rhapsodic essay of more original material - must run a close second.
Two works are central to the repertory - Bloch's Schelomo and Bruch's Kol Nidrei and with them are works by David Diamond and Gerard Schwarz, and the cellist's own arrangement with strings of Bloch's Prayer.
The accompanying Israel Symphony is much like Schelomo but maybe on an even more elevated scale, made more eloquent by the addition of a small chorus at the end.
