Schenk, Johann Baptist (1753–1836)

Austrian composer. A pupil of Georg Wagenseil 1774–77, he made his public debut as an opera composer in 1785. Beethoven was his pupil in 1793, and he was also a friend of Mozart and Schubert.

Die Weinlese (1785); Die Weihnacht auf dem Lande (1786); Achmet und Almanzine; Der Dorfbarbier (1796); Die Jagd; Der Fassbinder (1802).

Church music

Masses; cantatas Die Huldigung and Der Mai.

ten symphonies; four harp concertos; five string quartets and trios; songs.
