Schenk, Manfred (1930– )

German bass. After study in Stuttgart he was a member of the Frankfurt Opera, (1967–90). He sang Sarastro at Glyndebourne (1973), Hunding at the Metropolitan Opera House, New York (1977), and Pogner at Bayreuth (1981); he returned to Bayreuth as Fasolt and Gurnemanz (1992). He made his London debut in 1981 at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, as King Henry in Wagner's Lohengrin. He appeared at the Salzburg Festival in 1985, as Nettuno in the Henze/Monteverdi Ulisse; other roles included Wagner's Hans Sachs (Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg/The Mastersingers of Nuremberg) and Wotan (the Ring cycle), Verdi's Grand Inquisitor (Don Carlos), and Beethoven's Rocco (Fidelio).
