Scherchen, Hermann

Scherchen, Hermann (1891–1966)

German conductor. He collaborated with Schoenberg 1911–12, and in 1919 founded the journal Melos to promote contemporary music. He moved to Switzerland in 1933, and was active as a conductor and teacher. He wrote two texts, Handbook of Conducting and The Nature of Music. During the 1950s he founded a music publishing house, Ars Viva Verlag, and an electronic studio at Gravesano.
