Schibler, Armin (1920–1986)

Swiss composer. He studied music while at school at Aarau, and then at the Zurich Conservatory. In 1942 he became a pupil of Burkhard, and later studied in England with Rubbra and Tippett. He had local success with a variety of musical forms.

Works Stage works operas Der spanische Rosenstock (1950), The Devil in the Winter Palace (1953), The Feet in the Fire; three chamber ballets.

Vocal oratorio Media in vita; cantatas Marignano, Vision des Mittelalters, Die Hochzeit (Gotthelf) and Cantata domestica; songs.

Instrumental three symphonies (1946–57), symphonic variations, toccata and fugue for string orchestra; violin concerto, piano concerto, horn concerto (1956), trombone concerto (1957), percussion concerto, fantasy for violin and orchestra; concerto for violin, cello, and strings; toccata, interlude, and fugue for wind instruments; piano quartet; five string quartets (1945–75), violin and piano sonata; toccata for organ; Circulus Fugae for piano.
