Schiedam

Port in South Holland province, southwest Netherlands, on the River Meuse, 5 km/3 mi west of Rotterdam; population (1997) 74,900. It forms part of the Rotterdam-Europoort complex. The chief centre for Dutch gin, it also makes liqueurs and candles, and has a shipping trade and iron works.
