Schiff, Andras (1953– )

Hungarian pianist. He studied at the Liszt Academy, Budapest, and with George Malcolm in London. He made his debut in Budapest and won prizes at the Tchaikovsky Competion, Moscow (1974) and the Leeds International Piano Competition (1975). He made his New York concerto debut in 1978, and recital debut in 1989; his Salzburg debut was made in 1982. He has a wide repertory but is best known for his interpretations of Bach, notably in the Goldberg Variations, The Well-Tempered Clavier, and the English Suites.
