Schiff, Heinrich (1951- )

Austrian cellist and conductor. He studied in Vienna, and with André Navarra in Detmold. He won prizes in competitions in Warsaw, Geneva, and Vienna, and appeared as soloist with orchestras in Vienna, London, Stockholm, and Tokyo. He also plays in recital, and made US debut in 1982. He made his debut as a conductor with the Vienna Symphony Orchestra in 1984, and from 1990 was artistic director of the Northern Sinfonia. In 1986 Henze wrote for him the Liebeslieder/Love Songs for cello and orchestra.
