Schillinger, Joseph

Schillinger, Joseph (1895–1943)

Russian-born US composer and theoretician. He published a number of books on music theory, and also several compositions. George Gershwin was among his many pupils.

He studied at St Petersburg Conservatory with Alexander Tcherepnin (Cherepnin), among others, and then taught at Kharkov Music Academy 1918–22, and in Leningrad 1926–28. In 1929 he settled in the USA, teaching a mathematical method of his own.

Orchestral and solo

March of the Orient; First Airphonic Suite for theremin (an early electronic musical instrument), orchestra, and piano; piano pieces.
