Schirmer, (Friedrich) Gustav (Emil) (1829-1893)

German-born music publisher. Schirmer emigrated to the USA as a child. After working for various music publishing firms, he bought his own in 1861. Schirmer's company became one of the great international music publishers, promoting new US and European composers, including Wagner and Tchaikovsky. He gave generously to help Wagner build his Festspielhaus in Bayreuth.
