Schlemmer, Oskar (1888–1943)

German choreographer, sculptor, painter, teacher, and designer. He was a member of the Bauhaus school of artists during the 1920s. His paintings and sculptures are characterized by stylized, mannequinlike figures. His explorations of form, colour, light, and motion resulted in a series of dances which were radically different from the prevailing Ausdruckstanz style of the time. His dances are extremely simple and lack explicit emotional statements; they include Triadic Ballet 1922 (music by Paul Hindemith) and Bauhaus Dances 1926.
