Schlesinger, James R(odney) (1929– )

US economist and cabinet member. Schlesinger formulated the Bureau of the Budget's energy policy in 1969 and was the chairman of the Atomic Energy Commission, 1971–73. He became US secretary of defence in 1973, supporting bombing raids on Cambodia. As secretary of energy in the Carter administration, he championed atomic testing.
