Schlesinger, John

Schlesinger, John (Richard) (1926–2003)

English film and television director. His eclectic career embraced British social conscience films of the 1960s, comedies, thrillers, and nostalgic period pieces. His first US film, Midnight Cowboy (1969, Academy Award), was a great critical and commercial success; it was followed by Sunday, Bloody Sunday (1971), Marathon Man (1978), Yanks (1979), Pacific Heights (1990), Eye for an Eye (1996), and The Next Best Thing (2000).

Early films include Billy Liar (1963) and Darling (1965). His extensive television work includes Cold Comfort Farm (1995) and The Tale of Sweeney Todd (1998).
