Schmalkalden

Town in the Land of Thuringia, Germany, on the River Schmalkalde, 22 km/14 mi northwest of Suhl; population (1995) 17,000. There are iron-ore mines in the nearby hills of the Thuringian Forest, and the town has metal and glassmaking industries. Schmalkalden is also a spa town and health resort.

In 1530 the League of Schmalkalden, an alliance of Protestant cities and princes against the Holy Roman Emperor Charles V, was formed here in the Gothic town hall. Martin Luther stayed in the town in 1537.

The Renaissance castle, Schloss Wilhelmsburg (1585–89, subsequently rebuilt), houses a museum of local history, including the iron and steel industry.
