Schmeichel, Peter (1963– )

Danish footballer. Regarded by many as the world's best goalkeeper of the 1990s, he was a member of the Manchester United side that won five FA Premiership titles in six seasons, including three FA Cup and league doubles 1993–99. He was a member of the Danish side that won the 1992 European Championships. Making his international debut in 1987, Schmeichel won 128 caps before his decision in February 2001 to retire from international competition in order to prolong his domestic career. In July 2001, he returned to England from Portugal and joined Aston Villa for one season before playing his final season with Manchester City.

Born in Gladsaxe, Denmark, he played for Gladsaxe Hero (where he was signed as a striker), Hvidovre, and Brøndby before being signed by Manchester United in 1991 for £500,000. He played nearly 400 games for Manchester United in his eight years at the club. In July 1999, he joined Portuguese side Sporting Lisbon, and helped them to the Portuguese league championship. He scored his only international goal, a penalty, in Denmark's friendly match against Belgium in Copenhagen, Denmark, in June 2000.

In 1998 he was one of the first players to be inducted into the FA Premiership's Hall of Fame.
