Schmidt, Andreas (1959– )

German baritone. He studied with Fischer-Dieskau in Berlin, where he made his debut at the Deutsche Oper in 1984, as Malatesta. He returned to the city in 1987, as Oedipus in the first performance of Rihm's opera and as Ryuji in the premiere of Henze's Das verratene Meer. From 1986 he appeared in London at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, as Valentin (Gounod, Faust) and Guglielmo (Mozart, Così fan tutti/All Women Do It). His concerts included Mephistopheles in the Berlioz Faust at the London Barbican Centre, and Papageno in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte/The Magic Flute at the London Promenade Concerts. He made his Salzburg opera debut in 1990, as Olivier in Richard Strauss's Capriccio; he appeared at the 1993 Aix-en-Provence Festival, as Lysiart in Weber's Euryanthe.
