Schmidt, Gustav (1816–1882)

German composer and conductor. He studied with Hummel and others at Weimar, and with Mendelssohn at Leipzig. He began as an opera conductor at Brno and then served in the same capacity in several German towns, ending his career at Darmstadt.

operas Prinz Eugen der edle Ritter, Weibertreue, La Réole, Alibi; incidental music for a play based on Dickens's A Christmas Carol; male-voice choruses; songs.
