Schmidt, Wolfgang (1954– )

German tenor. He first sang with the Pocket Opera of Nuremberg, then at the Court Theatre, Bayreuth. From 1986 he sang at Dortmund, notably as Otello and Siegfried, and in 1989 at Bregenz, as Wagner's Erik. He appeared at the 1991 Salzburg Festival in Mozart's Die Zauberflöte/The Magic Flute. Between 1992 and 1994 he performed in Wagner operas at Bayreuth, appearing as Tannhäuser, and as Siegfried in a new production of the Ring conducted by James Levine.
