Schmidt-Rottluff, Karl (1884-1976)

German expressionist painter and printmaker. He was a founding member of die Brücke in Dresden 1905, active in Berlin from 1911. Inspired by Vincent van Gogh and fauvism, he developed a vigorous style of brushwork and a bold palette. He painted portraits and landscapes and produced numerous woodcuts and lithographs.
