Schmiege, Marilyn (1954– )

US mezzo-soprano. She studied at Boston University and the Zurich Opera School. She made her debut as Dorabella (Mozart, Così fan tutti/All women Do It)at Wuppertal, in 1978. She sang at the Theater am Gärtnerplatz, Munich (1978–82), as Rosina (Rossini, Il Barbiere di Siviglia/The Barber of Seville), Cherubino (Mozart, Le Nozze di Figaro/The Marriage of Figaro), and Hänsel (Humperdinck, Hänsel und Gretel). She performed Rossi's Orfeo at La Scala, Milan, in 1983, and appeared as Strauss's Octavian (Der Rosencavalier/The Rose Cavalier) and Composer (Ariadne auf Naxos) at the Vienna Staatsoper. Her concert repertory includes Mahler's Das Lied von der Erde/The Song of the Earth (Aldeburgh, 1985), Marguerite in the Berlioz Damnation de Faust/The Damnation of Faust, and cantatas by Haydn. In 1994 she sang Waltraute in Wagner's Götterdämmerung/Twilight of the Gods at the Théâtre du Châtelet, Paris.
