Schmitt, (Georg) Aloys (1827–1902)

German conductor, pianist and composer. He was a pupil of his father, the pianist and composer Aloys Schmitt (1788–1866). He toured widely in Europe as a pianist, and after various posts as a conductor he settled at Dresden in 1893, as director of the Mozart Society. He married the singer Cornelia Czany (1851–1906), and completed and edited Mozart's unfinished C minor Mass.

opera Trilby (adapted from Nodier by Scribe), Das Wunderwasser and Maienzauber; incidental music for plays; overtures and other orchestral works; concert piece for oboe and orchestra; string quartets, piano trios; piano pieces; songs.
