Schmitt-Walter, Karl (1900–1985)

German baritone. He studied in Nuremberg where he made his debut in 1921. After singing in Wiesbaden (1929–34) he was engaged in Berlin until 1950. He sang at Munich (1950–61), and in 1953 appeared in London at Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, singing the Count in the British premiere of Richard Strauss's Capriccio. He sang Papageno (Mozart, Die Zauberflöte/The Magic Flute) at Salzburg, and was Beckmesser (Wagner, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg/The Mastersingers of Nuremberg) at Bayreuth from 1956 to 61.
