Schneider, Peter (1939– )

Austrian conductor. After study with Swarowsky in Vienna, he conducted Handel's Giulio Cesare/Julius Caesar at the Salzburg Landestheater, in 1959. He conducted at Heidelberg from 1961, and at Dusseldorf from 1968, where he notably led a complete cycle of Janáček's operas. From 1981 he appeared at the Bayreuth Festival, with Wagner's Der fliegende Holländer/The Flying Dutchman, Lohengrin, and Ring cycle (1987). In 1986 he led Mozart's Die Zauberflöte/The Magic Flute at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London, and Strauss's Der Rosenkavalier/The Rose Cavalier in Tokyo, with the company of the Vienna Staatsoper. He was music director of the Bayerische Staatsoper at Munich from 1993, when he conducted Strauss's Die Frau ohne Schatten/The Woman without a Shadow.
