Schneider-Siemssen, Günther (1926– )

German designer. He studied in Munich and worked in Bremen (1954–62). He designed the Peter Brook production of Schoenberg's Erwartung/Waiting at the Royal Opera House, Covent Garden, London (1961), and returned for Wagner's Ring (1962–64). He worked at Salzburg from 1965, at both the summer and Easter Festivals; his notable collaborations with Karajan included Mussorgsky's Boris Godunov, the Ring, Tristan und Isolde, and Strauss's Die Frau ohne Schatten/The Woman with no Shadow. He also designed the premiere production of Berio's Un Re in Ascolto/A King in Waiting, at Salzburg in 1984. He was noted for his subtle use of colour and light, and was influenced by the ideas of Alfred Roller
