Schneiderhan, Wolfgang Eduard

Schneiderhan, Wolfgang Eduard (1915–2002)

Austrian violinist and conductor. He studied with Ševčik in Písek, in Prague, and with Winkler in Vienna. In 1932 he became the leader of the Vienna Symphony Orchestra, and in 1936 he joined the Vienna Staatsoper Orchestra. He became professor at the State Academy in Vienna, and leader of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. From 1938 to 1951 he led his string quartet, and from 1949 to 1960 a piano trio. He also conducted from the 1970s, leading Schmidt's Notre Dame at the Vienna Volksoper, in 1975. In 1948 he married the soprano Irmgard Seefried; with her he gave the first performance of Henze's Ariosi (1963).
