Schnitzler, Arthur (1862–1931)

Austrian dramatist. A doctor with an interest in psychiatry, he was known for his psychological dramas exploring egotism, eroticism, and self-deception in Viennese bourgeois life. He established his reputation with the play Liebelei/Playing with Love 1895. Reigen/Merry-Go-Round 1897, a cycle of dramatic dialogues depicting lust, caused a scandal when performed 1920 but made a successful French film as La Ronde 1950, directed by Max Ophuls. His novel Leutnant Gustl 1901 pioneered interior monologue in fiction.

Schnitzler was born in Vienna. After studying medicine and working as a hospital doctor, he joined the Young Vienna group of antinaturalistic writers. His other plays include Der grüne Kakadu/The Green Cockatoo 1913 and Professor Bernhardi 1912. Other novels include Der Weg ins Freie/The Road to the Open 1908, Casanovas Heimfahrt/Casanova's Homecoming 1918, and Therese 1928.
