Schock, Rudolf

Schock, Rudolf (1915–1986)

German tenor. He made his debut at Brunswick in 1937. He sang in Berlin after World War II, and at Hamburg (1947–56), visiting Edinburgh with the company, in 1952. He appeared at Salzburg from 1948, as Idomeneo and in the first performance of Liebermann's Penelope (1954). He sang Walther (Wagner, Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg/The Mastersingers of Nuremberg) at Bayreuth in 1959, and recorded the role with Kempe. Other roles included Florestan (Beethoven, Fidelio), Tamino (Mozart, Die Zauberflöte/The Magic Flute), and Bacchus (Strauss, Ariadne auf Naxos); he was also popular in operetta.
