Schomburg, Arthur A(lonzo) (1874–1938)

Puerto Rican scholar. Schomberg worked as a bank clerk in New York until he founded the division of Negro Literature, History, and Prints at the Harlem 135th Street Branch Library in 1925. The collections were purchased by the Carnegie Corporation in 1926; and Schomburg remained as curator until his death. His collections form the basis for a comprehensive library of information on African-Americans.
