Schomburgk, Robert Hermann (1804–1865)

Anglo-German traveller and consular official. In 1835 he was sent by the British Royal Geographical Society to explore British Guiana (Guyana), which he wrote about in Description of British Guiana (1840). Schomburgk was the discoverer of the Victoria regia lily. He also drew the Schomburgk line frontier between British Guiana and Venezuela and Brazil (1841–43).

He was born in Freiburg, Prussian Saxony. He served as British consul in Siam (Thailand) from 1857 to 1864.

His other books include The Natural History of the Fishes of Guiana (1843) and History of Barbados (1847). He edited Sir Walter Raleigh's Discoverie of Guiana (1848).
