Schonbein, Christian Friedrich (1799–1868)
| German chemist. He became professor at Basel University in 1828. In 1839 he discovered ozone, which he so named because of its peculiar smell (Greek ozein, ‘to smell’). In 1845 he invented gun-cotton, from which he obtained collodion. |
