School District of Abington Township v. Schempp

US Supreme Court decision of 1963 dealing with mandatory religious worship in public schools. The case challenged the constitutionality of an Abington, Pennsylvania, statute that forced students to recite Bible verses and the Lord's Prayer in school. The Court ruled that such practice violated First Amendment measures against establishing an official religion. Since the statute had no secular legislative purpose, it was declared invalid.
