Schoolcraft, Henry Rowe (1793–1864)

US explorer and ethnologist. Schoolcraft discovered and named the source of the Mississippi River in 1832. His extensive relations with American Indians led to his appointment as Indian agent for the tribes around Lake Superior in 1822, and later as superintendent of Indian affairs for Michigan.
