Scorel, Jan van (1495–1562)

Dutch painter. Deeply influenced by Italian art, he introduced Renaissance motifs to the northern part of the Low Countries.

Scorel trained in Alkmaar and Utrecht, where he settled. He travelled widely, visiting Germany, Italy, and Palestine (there are portraits by him of Dutch pilgrims to Jerusalem in Utrecht Museum). Appointed keeper of the Belvedere in the Vatican by Adrian (Hadrian) VI (a native of Utrecht), he acquired a deep admiration for the art of Raphael Sanzio and Michelangelo. He returned to Utrecht in 1524 and spent the rest of his life there.

He was highly influential in Holland, his students including Maerten Heemskerk and Anthonis Mor.
