Schröter, Corona (Elisabeth Willhelmine) (1751–1802)

German singer, actor, and composer. In 1776 Goethe invited her to the court of Weimar, where she appeared in his plays and wrote the music for his play Die Fischerin, which included her setting of his poem ‘Erlkönig’. Her brother was the composer Johann Schröter.

She learnt music from her father, the oboist Johann Friedrich Schröter, lived in Warsaw and Leipzig as a child, and appeared in the latter town at the age of 14. She was in London with her family 1772–74. She retired in 1786 to teach, paint, and compose.
