Schröter, Johann Samuel

    0.02 sec.

Schröter, Johann Samuel (c. 1752–1788)

German pianist and composer. He settled in England, and succeeded J C Bach as music master to Queen Charlotte in 1782. He wrote chiefly keyboard music, including some of the earliest pieces written for the piano.

He was taught by his father, the oboist Johann Friedrich Schröter, and made his debut as a pianist in Leipzig in 1767. In 1772 he went on tour with his father and sister Corona Schröter to Holland and England, where he appeared at one of the Bach-Abel concerts.

It was his widow with whom Haydn had an autumnal affair during his first visit to London; Haydn made copies of her letters to him.
