Schuller, Gunther

Schuller, Gunther (1925- )

US composer and horn player. He was professor of composition at the New England Conservatory in Boston, Massachusetts, 1966-77, and joint artistic director of the Berkshire Music Center 1970-85. He has written on and been influenced by jazz.

After playing horn in the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra he joined the New York Metropolitan Orchestra 1945-59.

The Visitation (after Kafka, 1966), The Fisherman and his Wife (1970), and A Question of Taste (1989).

Orchestral

Seven Studies on Themes of Paul Klee (1959), Three Studies in Texture for orchestra; ballet Variants; symphonies; concertos for cello, horn, piano; violin concerto (1976), double bassoon concerto (1978), saxophone concerto (1983), Concerto quaternio (1984); Concerto festivo for brass quintet and orchestra (1984); concertos for bassoon (1985), viola (1985), string quartet (1988), flute (1989), and piano three hands (1989).

Chamber

Fantasia concertante for three trombones and piano; quartet for four double basses; five pieces for five horns.
