British composer. Born in Dutch Indonesia, he went to England in 1941 and studied at the Royal College of Music in London; but he was largely self-taught.

Ensemble and chamber

wind quintet (1963, revised 1976), two string quartets, flute sonatina (1968), piano quartet (first performance Cheltenham, 1986), Contrasts for piano (1973).

Orchestral

Variants for orchestra (1970), Six Studies of Francis Bacon for orchestra (1968), piano concerto (1973), violin concerto (1978).

Choral with orchestra

The Double Heart, cantata (1976), Piers Plowman for soloists, chorus, and orchestra (1980).
