Schuyler, Philip John

Schuyler, Philip John (1733–1804)

American public official. A member of the Continental Congress 1775–77, he was named general in command of the Department of New York at the outbreak of the American Revolution 1775. Replaced in 1777, he returned to the Continental Congress 1778–81. A supporter of the US Constitution, Schuyler became one of New York's first US senators 1789–91 and later served 1797–98.

Born in Albany, New York, Schuyler inherited extensive real estate holdings in the Mohawk Valley. After service in the French and Indian War 1756–63, he was elected to the provincial assembly 1768.
