Schwäbisch-Gmünd

City in Baden-Württemberg, Germany, on the River Rems, 48 km/30 mi east of Stuttgart; population (1995) 63,800. It has produced gold and silverware since medieval times and it also manufactures watches, clothing, glassware, and metal goods. Schwäbisch-Gmünd was one of the free city-states of the Holy Roman Empire.

There is the early 13th-century Romanesque St John's church, the Gothic Minster of the Holy Cross (early 14th century), the Fuggerei (a Romanesque building with 15th-century half-timbering), and several towers of the medieval fortifications (14th–15th century) have been preserved . A former Dominican monastary (18th century) now houses the Prediger Cultural Centre and Municipal Museum. There is a school of metalworking. To the southwest are Roman remains, including Roman baths.
