Schwab, Charles M(ichael) (1862–1939)

US industrialist. Schwab became president of the Carnegie Steel Company in 1897 and then first president of US Steel in 1901. He resigned in 1903 and joined the Bethlehem Steel Corporation, building it into a major steel producer with his progressive management policies. Schwab was drafted by President Wilson to direct the Emergency Fleet Corporation in 1918, and he presided over the American Iron and Steel Institute, 1927–32.
