Schweitzer, Anton (1735–1787)

German composer and conductor. Appointed conductor of the Seyler opera troupe in 1769, he was at Weimar 1772–74, and at Gotha from 1774 until his death, succeeding Georg Benda as court conductor there in 1780.

He studied with Jakob Friedrich Kleinknecht (1722–1794) in Bayreuth and in Italy 1764–66, and was appointed to the court in Hildburghausen in 1766.

Singspiele and opera

Singspiele; operas, including Walmir und Gertraud (1769), Die Dorfgala (1772), Alceste (libretto by Wieland, 1773), Rosamunde (ditto).

Stage

monodramas Pygmalion (after Rousseau, 1772), Polyxena; dramatic prologues, including Elysium, Apollo unter den Hirten; incidental music to Goethe's Clavigo (1776), Molière's Le bourgeois gentilhomme (1771), and others; ballets.

cantatas, symphonies.
