Schwenke, Christian Friedrich Gottlieb

Schwenke, Christian Friedrich Gottlieb (1767-1822)

German organist, composer, conductor, and editor. He was a pupil of his father, Johann Gottlieb Schwenke (1744-1823), and of Kirnberger and Marpurg in Berlin. In 1789 he succeeded C P E Bach as municipal music director in Hamburg. His sons Johann Friedrich (1792-1852) and Karl (1789-after 1870), and his grandson Friedrich Gottlieb (1823-96), were also musicians.

Works

music for the stage; two oratorios; cantatas; church music settings of odes by Klopstock; oboe concerto; six organ fugues; piano sonatas. Also edited Bach's ‘48’, Mozart's Requiem, and works by Hasse, Handel, and Spohr.
